Eastern Europeans
Even though the immigrants were
poor but they chose to come. In the America there was a lot of available lands.
Poor people will go to a place were they can build something. There was a lot
of open and inhabitant land. The America needed more people to fill the
country. The America was becoming
industrial. The people who came to the America were associated of being dumb.
This is not necessary true, because they did not know the language. They did
not know how to negotiate with the people, and that made them in a
disadvantaged position. The book also said that some of these emigrants were
sojourners, which means their decision not to stay at the county. It was hard to track immigrants ethnicity,
because they were tracking them by their nationality.
Poles had their own catholic
church. They felt they are not represented in the American Catholic Church. The majority of the Poles who settled in
American cities came due to economic reasons. The Poles had some resultants to
simulate in the American society. They wanted to keep their language and they
had their own church, so they can secure their own culture.
In 1880, there were about two
hundred fifty thousands Jews in the US.
About fifty thousand came from Eastern Europe. The census records did not document religion,
so it is difficult to count Jews. The Eastern European Jews had two main
reasons to immigrate: they fled due to religion discrimination and they also
wanted to improve their standard of living.
